Come sailing with me on a journey that is my PhD studies and my wedding planning. Some people said if you want to complicate your PhD, you should get married. And I'm going to do just that. ^^

I haven't been blogging much as I've been pretty much occupied with my studies... I'm happy to say I did make my debut as a research during a conference late last month. While it was nerve wrecking, I must admit, I actually did feel like a real researcher. I guess after at least a year of being an assistant, it feels different to be able to present as the lead author. I think I will continue to be nervous when faced with such situations, but I'll persist. ^^

Weddings...weddings... I must admit at the moment the whole wedding things have been fun. I guess it's because T is the type of guy who enjoys the process of planning a wedding, so he's very involved. Which is nice, because at times I can get him to do stuff, while he lets me do all the fun bits like trying on dresses, colours etc...

I just hope things continue to look up the next year. Can you believe it? It's already December.

knitting night & a new project!

We return to our usual programming... knitting!

In January, Anuja had a brilliant idea of hosting a knitting night for a couple of her girlfriends. So we gathered, each brought a dish and we created a monthly tradition! Projects that was started/continued on the first night; a blanket and 5 scarves!

In February, I finished my long-awaited KIP!

Then March, I hosted it in my house. :)

Projects started: 3 scarves, 1 garment
Project continued: 2 scarves
Project completed: 1 scarf and 1 blanket

Anuja finished her blanket. ^^

Breanna completed one scarf and started another. ^^

Roopa continued on her multi-coloured, recycled silk scarf. ^^

And after much knitting hiatus, I've started on Stefanie Japel's Fitted Knit - Puffed Sleeved Feminine Cardigan. This whole piece is knitted in one, except for a little pick-up around the front edges for the button bands.

Even though the original is in red, I've done mine in a pink-ish red Zara. I'm quite excited by it, though there are some bits about the pattern that I worry about... :P

Anyway, wish me luck! At least with knitting nights continuing every month, I get some motivation to finish this. ^^

Reflection...

I guess when one chapter of one's life closes a reflection is in order. Today is my last day of work from the place where I've worked for the past 1 year and 3 months. There were highs and lows during the working period, but hey...it's just part of working. :)

There were little perks of course, that I enjoyed. For example, the whole "my office" idea. Although it was of little importance (I love sitting with people, but some people might have found me too chatty), it was nice when I really just want silence to do my work. Working in uni, I love the opportunity to learn and being able to do courses I want, it was good too. Then the people. I said today in my thank you speech (whoever leaves get morning tea), I was indeed sincere in saying that one of the things I'll miss the most is the people. However, that being said, it is nice to say that some people are my friends, and not just my colleagues.

Now....the things to look forward now that I'm not working in this job.... no wait. I better clarify what is going on next. I'm actually starting my phd and working 1 day a week at an old department where I used to work when I first graduated in.

So....

OTHER than the actual studying and minimum (or maximum...;;^^) work....

I want to be able to:
1. Knit more!
2. Knit more!
3. Knit more!
4. Do more of my jewellery.
5. Learn more of things I want to learn eg. Japanese, more jewellery making stuff etc...
6. Clean my study...seriously. :P
7. Maybe revamp my room a bit to make it look nicer?
8. Get involved more with networking opportunities...
9. Just be nicer in general, ie. because I don't have work pressure, maybe I won't get annoyed so easily? Maybe I should just knit more to destress... :)

I'm sure there are a whole heaps of things I want to do... but I guess they'll come to me later. ^^

Photowalk - 7th February 2009

I went on a photowalk trip around Melbourne city on the 7th Feb 2009. It was a hot 43 deg, but I thought I should go on as I've already planned my day and I had some other things to do in the city anyway.

What made it all really interesting was the sights of Melbourne I had never seen before, of course, the people I met were great too and I picked up some photography tips too. :)

Revelations & Resolutions

The new year, my birthday and Chinese new year has come and gone and finally the last day of January. January was certainly full of revelations. One thing for sure is that I'm really blessed to have so many friends who celebrated my birthday and this year I actually had 4 birthday cakes! And the pressie (though not important) it's like a psychic thing. I got things that I really wanted even from my bf who usually has trouble finding the right gift. However, my point is, as I had my final round of birthday celebrations I realised that not everyone is fortunate enough to have so many great and fantastic friends. ^^ So thank you.

Then there was the round of 40 deg. days in Melbourne. Why is this a revelation? Well let's just say I actually appreciate my parents even more. ;;^^ Thank goodness for air-conditioning. Enough said. ;;^^

So what's the resolutions?

Well, I'm going to be starting on phd this year. I'm not sure how the journey will turn out but I've enrolled. :P I guess it'll be a LONG 3 years. -_-
But I'll bear with it. ^^

I'm going to be more organised with health (ie. watch what I'm eating and exercise more!!!) and money. I haven't been the best person in these two areas, but inspired by April, I've decided to restart my spending diary and food diary. I realised there's actually a correlation between my spending and my eating. :P I spend money on too much food!!! I guess at least these two things are tied together... phew.

Then finally I want to read more. Books I mean. I've realised how much I've missed reading when I'm hooked into the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. I'm at Eclipse now (YAY!). I'm going to go back to my Betsie the Queen of Vampire series by MaryJanice Davidson after I finish Breaking Dawn. ^^ And I miss talking about books with April!!! ^^

I guess finally I need to be more patient. Bf's tutoring sometimes annoy me because it impacts our dating life. But I guess at the end of the day, that's what he loves to do. And I cannot stomp on his happiness for my happiness.

To be more pro-active with me.u! ^^ Above is a birthday present I made for my friend Evie. ^^

Anyway... that's all I can think of for now. :P

But tonight there will be a knitting night at A's house. So I better prepare as to what project I want to do... a new one or a KIP?

Maybe I should add in another resolution... to complete all my KIP. -_-

No no...don't panic...it wasn't mine. :) It was A's and it was the most wonderful wedding! Ok, I may not have been to many weddings, but this wedding it was just so special. It's so special when the bride is one of your good friends, whom you had heaps of fun with before. It was a beautiful romantic story that culminated into this beautiful beginning. :)

The bride was gorgeous, and she was definitely not a bridezilla! She actually did a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and everything went without a hitch. See? Excellent planning makes the wedding day hassle-free. ^^

Anyway, here are some photos of the wonderful day.

This is a matching ring that was made for both of us just to wear on that day. The theme was pink, the bouquet was pink roses and tulips. So my friend requested for me to make a pair for the day so we'd both match. ^^

And I nearly cried too at the end of the ceremony! And poor bf got stressed out with the people asking him when is our turn...hahahaha....

Habu!

Yesterday I went to The Craft & Quilt Fair. The only reason why I wanted to go was not to get anymore beading supplies...;;^^ I was actually quite excited to see the list of yarn shops in the exhibitor list. I was definitely not disappointed with the fair.

It was crowded, in fact much more crowded when compared to the fair held in Caulfield Racecourse. We've never seen so many craft people in one room! Shanwen & I decided that the most logical thing to do was go aisle per aisle. Nevermind that each aisle took us 1/2 hour to explore as we got sidetracked and could not resist some of the bargains available. ^^

However, one of our biggest find was the Habu yarns!!! ^^ We've read about it and this time, we saw...we touched.... and we bought them! ^^ We went to shop twice just to make sure we would not regret not buying them. So, instead of buying just one ball, I bought 7. ;;^^ Shanwen, buckled too and bought one Habu and 2 other mohair and angora yarns.

I also picked up some lovely silk-ribbon type of yarn done in multi-colours. I'm happy with my finds and I got a feeling that scarves are definitely in the works....

Talking about future projects, being influenced by Shanwen (as usual) instead of knitting the 28thirty I've decided to knit February Lady Cardi instead. It has a similar look. While the lace looks a bit daunting, I've taken the plunge and bought 2 blue colours in Zarina which I will knit together to achieve a mild effect.

Starting new projects is always daunting, but it'll be fun. ^^ I hope... ;;^^

It's Knitting Time!!!

Yes! The Melbourne's weather has been perfect for knitting. It's gloomy most days and it's freezing cold. Today alone I had to wear 2 jackets at the same time and I still could feel the chill.

It's always good though to have the rain and most importantly the cold weather has "inspired" me to knit faster and I've finally completed my Teal Bulky Scarf! ^^

Knitted in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (doubled up) on 12mm needles, this scarf is warm to wear and soft against the skin. ^^

When I designed this scarf I only wanted a straight bulky scarf. However, the endless (almost like a mobius) scarf is apparently a trend this winter season, with Witchery and Country Road doing their versions. I knew then I need to have one and thus modified my own scarf to be dual functioned! I added mismatched buttons at the end which added more character to the piece and when buttoned up, the scarf becomes a loop!

My version of the loopy scarf...it's a bit bulky but at least it will be warm. ^^

This scarf can also be worn as a normal scarf. ^^

On the jewellery making side of things, I've just made some new stuff. Presenting the Harmony series! It's basically a basic circular wired design that comes with different themes. Banking on the popularity of the Beetle Bug ring, there is now Beetle Bug necklace. However, as soon as I showed this to my friend, it was bought. ;;^^ I might repeat the design later. The pink rose version is new too...so expect a lot of the Harmony Series because I love the design.

All I need is a holiday....

... to blog! Things is a bit busy at work (though we are at one of the most interesting part of the work), so I have not been able to blog. The knitting front has been slow too, though I'm still knitting my Fetching. I have not even been able to finish one side, d'oh!!!

(28thirty...looks beautiful and great to wear isn't it?? I have to knit one of these!)

Went to the Wool Baa yesterday, though I was pretty good and did not buy anything (since T has put me under a very strict budget :P). Shanwen on the other hand, made all the purchases for 28thirty. Melita is knitting this too. Since it is an absolutely fabulous pattern from Zephyr Style, I'm going to knit one too! The question is when I will knit it...;;^^ Since not only do I have more than 2 projects in progress, I have a multitude in queue! :P

And did I mention I went to Kinokuniya in Sydney last month? I picked up heaps of knitting books and some Chinese comics too...tee hee... ^^ I'll add pictures of what I've picked up next time...:)

On the beading front, I want to blog about this special customisation order. ^^

M came to me one day and showed me this lovely necklace. It's made of natural materials such as seed pods, shells and wood. The colours too were incredible. The issue is that M would like matching earrings made for this piece as it was a bit hard to match.

I was very lucky as Anuja had the exact same red beads. Thus, I was able to come up with the earring pieces. ^^ To capture the same feel, I made sure that the red bead repeats are the same to the original necklace.

After showing the results to M, she decided that a bracelet would be great too. Hence, I came up with the bracelet, pictured above. Using the memory wire and keeping in theme with the whole look and colour, the bracelet works really well despite the beads not being the exact same beads.

Overall though, I think the whole collection worked well. I was extremely pleased with the results and if it wasn't for Anuja's help, I would not have been able to finish this order. So thanks Anuja! ^^

By the way...the funny thing about this collection is...when I was young and living in Singapore, I used to collect these red seed pods. I used to have jars of them. We used to give friends or boys we had crushes on a jar to signify our friendship or "love" (respectively) for them. LOL I thought it's interesting that they do make good beads too.

Things have been quite hectic with my current work. But I'm actually loving it, in particular, I'm beginning to see the impact of the project. But the thing that makes me happy too is being able to continue to do what I love... knit & bead! ^^

Just as I said to Melita before, just because I quit from Wool Baa, does not mean I have to stop knitting. ^^ In fact, I got more time to knit and I've finally finished my pink/green bow tie scarf which I'm quite happy with. Best of all I finished it on time for a gift. ^^

I'm currently knitting my own scarf... I'll show the photos when it's done. ^^ But next, I'd probably knit another Fetching (refer to my post here too on my first one) as a gift for someone too. ^^

On the beading front, I finally "opened" my little stall at J's gallery, Rosie Gallery. It was a fun experience and like Shanwen said, we managed to sell some things. I'm quite happy that people enjoyed the things I made. It's not so much as the money, but I was mostly happy the things are going to good homes.

I also got some special orders. Here's one that I did for one particular order. This was a tag-team effort. The request was to make a whole set of necklace, earrings, bracelet and ring. Working with A, I made the ring and earrings. I was really pleased with the results. Here are the items I made. ^^

Still knitting!

Yes, yes I'm still alive and knitting. ^^ Things was hectic during the March period and things that I wished was not happening was happening. Thus there was a lack of update in my blog. However, the knitting went on. And so did the jewellery making. :)

I'm currently knitting the bow tie scarf which you may remember from my previous entries here. The one that I'm making now is knitted in pink and green using a blend of Zara and Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK. So far, I love the colour combination! ^^ Though I'm a bout 1/2-way there, I can't wait till this is done!

On the jewellery making side of things, sales on etsy is a bit slow. However, when I started doing this again, I've told myself time and time again that it is a hobby and should not take precedence over my whole life so that the lack of sales would not affect me at all. However, one can always hope that sale would come one's way.... ^^

The good thing about making your own jewellery is that you'll always have earrings ready, designed in a way that you want it. Above is a piece I did for myself. I just wanted a really long pair of earrings to wear when my hair is down. And when I say long, I really love my earrings long and I love love love mismatched earrings!!!

Then, a gift! I made this for a colleague's bday. And to see her wear it, I'm happy....^^

And all these are the new stuff at the store today! ^^

So yes....I have been VERY productive! ^^

Before I launched into me.u being relaunched (yes, there is a pun).... I'll talk about what's been going on for the past week instead. :) Unfortunately, I was not able to catch up with Melita as I was swamped with deadlines even until the day before Good Friday. Sorry Melita!!! But hope that we can catch up next time and lovely to see you at the Stitches and Craft show! ^^

Well, when I first started working, there was one very lovely helpful person who sort of helped me to make the transition. Unfortunately, she will be leaving the uni for her new job. So to thank her I knitted her a scarf. I had to do a quick knit as I only realised she was leaving 3 days before it happened. :P So here is the result. I just hope that she liked it...and at least get some wear out of it. ^^

During the Easter break I went to Mt. Dandenong and it was fantastic! I got to watch the sunset with T and we played in the maze. Yes, we were like little kids, but hey it was fun! ^^

But.....my coup (shhh...don't tell T) for the holidays was...GEELONG!!!! Yes...Geelong!!! If you would like to know why I'm excited, look at this photo:

Still no idea why?? Let's look closer....

Apparently, Geelong is a knitting town!!!! I went to the Wool Museum and I swear I was like a little kid in a candy store. My poor friend C probably thought I'm like a little kid. I got really excited when I saw a 100 year old Axminster carpet machine and got even more excited when they demonstrated how it worked. Then all the antiqued knitting machines!!! It's was simply fabulousknitty!!!! I didn't buy any yarn though not for the lack of trying....unfortunately most shops were closed for the holidays and the yarns I managed to find are not exactly my favourite colours. But I still had a blast! :)

A Tale of Two Scarves....

...and very long ones they are. First is Creamy Peaches. Knitted in using 3 balls of Zara on 7mm needles, this scarf is a delight to knit. Soft to the touch, this scarf starts off with 28 stitches, knitted in the following pattern *k2, p1, repeat from * until last stitch k1. It became extremely long as all 3 balls of Zara was used up. I only casted off after the last ball almost finished. Very happy with this.^^

Next is Meeting Lines. This scarf is an experimentation. I was inspired by a Grinasco yarn that I've seen before which was a blend of pink and grey. However, I wasn't into the yarn composition, so I decided to buy 2 similar colours and blend it. I knitted this with 2 balls of Jaeger Extra Fine Merino Chunky in grey and 2 balls off Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in dusty pink. I knitted the 2 yarns together on a 12mm needles, casting on 8 stitches. After casting off, I picked up the side stitches and knitted the other way just to see how it looks. Finished with fringing, it captures the softness of both yarns, and hopefully presents an interesting effect when worn! ^^

and knitted in public! I know I know...while this activity seems normal to the avid knitter, I must admit I've never done it until this Sunday past. I've always thought I'd feel strange knitting in public or someone would sort of start pointing at me. To my surprise, I knitted in public without any major drama. In fact, has knitting came out in the open so much that no one would bat an eyelash to see someone knitting in public?

Anyhoo, the knitting in public episode has resulted in this!

I finished Juliet II! ^^ Knitting in the bamboo has been a mixed feeling. While it does split and drives one mad when needing to unravel a couple of stitches when mistakes are made, I cannot say I'm displeased with the result at all. In fact, knitting the pattern in slightly smaller needles produced a good gauge IMHO. While initially I had problems with a couple of rows, after taking a break, I actually knitted Juliet II without any mistakes. I did not have to do any creative embroidery with this! I love the colour and I'm still undecided if the button would be it. I still want to consider an interesting ribbon to finish it off. But I must say, I'm extremely happy. Serenity gave me knitting bliss! ^^

And knitting in public certainly makes one more productive!

In memory of the cakes shared....

... every Saturday by me & J. Peggy Lee's Siamese Cat Song playing on the computer as the customers sip their tea or coffee while browsing. The dead bugs in the jewellery display cases and the dust in the front book case. And the number of times I had to tell people the ugly yellow and black colour choice on the website was not my doing at all and of course...the vacuuming.

This Saturday (23rd Feb 2008) will be my last day working at Wool Baa.

The things I learnt, the things I experienced, the friends I made will be treasured. :) In fact, it's not a goodbye to all, so you'll see me there from time to time. Just because I'm quiting, does not mean I have to stop knitting. ^^ As Melita said to me, now I can be a customer and I can be demanding if I want! ^^

Imelda's Wish

It all started with a birthday wish...

.... and thus Imelda's Wish is contained in this box. She requested for something hand-made and this is what I came up with...

This short necklace features a lovely cloth button, crochetted & glass beads to delight and a little "wish" tag to make sure that all Imelda's wishes would come true. ^^

Forgive the grainy photo, but I did try to catch the details to this scarf knitted using 15mm needles with Zara Col. 1468. ^^ This scarf is my dad's Christmas present... at which point during Christmas I presented to him still in yarn format. ;;^^ But anyway, it's done now and hope my dad will get to get at least 1 wear out of it during winter... for some reason I found the males in my life don't really wear scarves. Except for my older brother who lives in tropical Singapore. Go figure. :P

A Job!

I've finally been offered a longer contract with the university I'm working for before. However, I've been given the position at another department. Everything seemed so scary, but I guess it it part of going for that first full time job. I didn't know when I got this job, it was meant to be full time... it was really a do'h moment...;;^^

But anyway went for my first day today and they actually gave me an office. I'm still amazed even though there may be a slight chance of me being moved to another office. It was still an office. The place was like a maze and I'm also amazed when I went to staff room I saw a large flat screen TV!!!! With Foxtel on it... o.O

Unlike April's workplace though...lol the dustmites are a mix of male and female...;;^^

Anyway, everything seemed to be pretty much flexible, starting and finishing time etc...

I just hope everything will work out...;;^^

Anyway, hope I can knit soon... if only it's not so hot here...;;^^

This entry is inspired by April's blog entry. The new year is only hmm... hours away and like everyone else, I have my own resolutions. Every new year is a beginning and a continuation so here are my resolutions. ^^

1. To lose weight & live healthier.
I guess that is 2 resolutions isn't it? ;;^^ I have to admit that I have recently gained weight. Maybe it's the Krispy Kreme Donuts, the Doughbuoys Donuts... the creamy (but oh so yummilicious) long-johns and donut that J always got me on most Saturdays... but I really have to lose some weight this coming year. I got the exercise machines. I just need to use them now. ;;^^

2. To actually have a "career".
I've finally finished my official study, so I guess that next step is to actually work properly. Yes, I'm working now, but I guess I just want to be a bit more serious about it now. I hope next year things will work out as I planned and I'll be able to say really what is my occupation by the middle of the year. I don't mind having multiple career, but I just want to work and actually earn some serious money, not erm just pocket money.

3. To re-study my problem-solving materials that I got from my previous supervisor.
This is an odd sounding one... but when I worked as a Research Assistant, I was lucky enough to work with a supervisor who wrote an interesting material on problem solving. I studied it but I got lost somehow in the middle as it became technical. This coming year, I want to study it again and actually apply it.

4. To be a better person (ie. more patient, more loving, more determined and less procrastination!).
You get the idea. :)

5. To study for my JLPT exams (maybe).
I'm still unsure if I really want to get the certification for my Japanese... but I studied it for 3 years before... :P I guess I might as well if I have the time and the money for the lessons. ;;^^

Anyway these are really the ones so far... I'll add to it as I go... haha...

Similar to my other Kris Kringle scarf (which I'm glad was liked by the recipient as the next day she wore it when I happened to see her on the street!!!), this scarf utilises the idea of patches. So I used up my Jo Sharp DK wool stash and my Cleckheaton Country Natural stash and this is what I came up with. ^^

Not that I love receiving presents (though who wouldn't) but I also love making my presents or even going through the whole present finding process makes me happy...;;^^

Anyway, this year I have 2 Kris Kringles with 2 groups of friends so I decided to use up my stash. This scarf may look "strange" when rolled up... almost boxy isn't it?

Well, it is! ^^ This scarf has been knitted with 3 ends of 8 Ply on 12mm needles, with a pattern adapted from Lynne Barr's Knitting New Scarves. If you have to get a scarf book, I wouldn't give this book a miss. I picked it up by accident. It was located right at the top shelf of a local Borders store. Those who know me personally would have known I am vertically challenged and could have completely missed the book. But out of curiosity to see what is on the top shelf, got a stool and grabbed this, browsed it and I was sold! I love the designs for the sheer creativity and best of all, the scarves are actually not that hard to make and they are adaptable as shown on this featured scarf.

Anyway, I hope whoever gets this scarf would be happy... ^^

This would be a rather longish entry... at least many photos and information to share. So please bear with me. ^^

So I took a break with Juliet II and produced this! This scarf has been knitted with Karabella - Aurora Melange in shade 18. As usual, I knitted this scarf on a 15mm needles with 3 strands at the same time. This piece is actually knitted for mum whom I think always look lovely with a dash of amethyst colour. She'll be arriving for my graduation so I'll keep you posted if she likes it or not...haha

Hopefully this scarf will tantalise my knitting mojo so I can finish Juliet II...though I have this sudden urge to knit more scarves. In summer..d'oh!

Also, being quite productive produced 3 jewellery designs. Well, actually 2 are pressies for people and they've been made with the people in mind. One features a long necklace with a filigree detail to suit my friend, Evelyn while the other one is deliberately kept simple as Chia (my other friend) seemed to like more simple accessories. ^^ Well, the third...umm it's mine. My own piece was made short, almost like a choker. I was playing around with wires and some of my buttons and I saw this choker/necklace idea from a Taiwanese drama I was watching. So the design kind of evolved from there.

is this. Juliet II unraveled before my eyes when I decided to unravel a couple of rows. She became a tangled mess... but I didn't like the looseness of the knitting anyway and will re-do this on 6mm needles instead to help with my tension.

I'm so so so in love with this fantastic pattern from Zephyr Style (Thank you to Shanwen & Melita who introduced me to the pattern by blogging about it.)!!! I've finished my Juliet and love it so much, I'm going to knit one in Patons Serenity in Pink! ^^

The lace did cause some issues...but I've worked it out by the time I've done the third set. And I think the way the pattern was done, it was easy to follow. ^^ I haven't decided if it'll be buttons or ribbons... but at the moment pin will be it, since on me, it does overlap...;;^^

On foodie note... I was experimenting with prawns the other day... and came up with this! ^^ It's Stir Fry Seasoned Prawns. Recipe will be coming soon. ^^

Daylight savings has started in Melbourne and I actually missed it... waking up really late (thinking it's still early). :P Anyway, since my work from the research is on track, I've been able to cook and experiment...and of course knit! ^^

Reasons to love Ikea: Swedish Meatballs!!!

I have to admit, I'm one of those person who loves going to Ikea, imagining what my ideal house should look like (including a walk-in wardrobe!). One other reason I love Ikea is for their Swedish Meatballs... it's cheap and yet filling. ^^ Imagine my happiness when I discovered we can actually get them frozen, the sauce in packs and cook them ourselves. Hence, my version of the Swedish Meatballs courtesy of Ikea and frozen fries. Real easy, and affordable too... ^^

Was exploring Shanwen's blog the other day, and through her links to cooking blogs, found a recipe for making Green Tea Daifuku. I decided to modify it with green tea ice cream filling instead. The first batch I made was hard... and I was thinking this can't be right. Yep... I was wrong... I used rice flour instead of glutinous rice flour. Tried a second batch and it was much much better. Only thing though, I had issues with the ice cream. So instead of filling it with the ice cream, why not just eat it with the ice cream? The green tea ice cream is from Baskin Robbins Melbourne Central @ Lower Ground Floor. ^^

Oh Juliet, Wherefore Art Thou?

On my knitting needles apparently! ^^ Inspired by Melita and Shanwen who are knitting this cute top, I've finally jumped in and started my Juliet from Zephyr Style too. ^^ I am knitting it in Bendigo Woollen Mill's Classic Venetian in 2x 8 ply. Hope I'll be ok when I've reached the lace bit...considering I don't do laces at all... but so far it's a quick knit. ^^

I've been quite busy recently with data entry tasks for my research assistant job. So I haven't had the time to actually do any any knitting. On the personal side, I've finished re-working on my brother's site, so now it's back up! Just working out the little kinks now... :P

However, just because I couldn't knit doesn't mean I couldn't talk about knitting! I got this most amazing book from Debbie Bliss, The Pure Cashmere Collection. The patterns are just divine! Great accessories with a lot of potentials to play around. Also includes simple garments that I can do. I'm simply excited! ^^

Also, it is confirmed that my next project will be the Tilted Duster as inspired by Shanwen's entry about it. Yarns? Checked! Needles? Checked! Mental preparation? Checked!!! With my speed of knitting I'm pretty confident if I start now, I can finish it by next winter. ^^

Continuing my food blogging... ^^ Tonight's menu is Chicken Baked Rice. I've done this recipe for many times now and my mum helped me come up with the original one ages ago... But I've decided to improve on the presentation by garnishing it with the parsley that Shanwen had suggested I put into my pasta.

This is it, full view and presented. ^^ BTW I'm working on putting some of recipes together in a little book... I mean a book for myself. ^^ But that means that I'll be putting some of them online on PDF format when I can. However, my style of cooking is anything goes... I'm the type of cook who rarely measures anything... ;;^^ So chances are my recipe would not have much measurements... everything is kind of done to taste.

On the knitting front, I'm thinking of a summer project... I have this nice silk yarn. I guess it's going to be another scarf... But I'm hoping to merge the jewellery making technique with this one... hope it'll work! ^^

BTW Melita, when you asked me the vest I was confused... lol I was talking about my supposedly quick knit vest. ;;^^ But later I realised you were talking about the vest I borrowed from you...haha. Sure I'll bring it down to Wool Baa when you are coming down. Please let me know in advance. ^^

A little bit about food...

My parents are wonderful cooks though I used to have doubt about my cooking talents. I mean when I have wonderful food cooked for me, I certainly find it easier to eat rather than cook. Hence, when my parents are not around, I just do the easiest thing which was go out and eat! ^^ But recently, after finishing university and realising that I do need to find a full time job, the importance of being economical hits home and I've been cooking. It also certainly helps when my bf prefers to eat home cooked food...;;^^ Anyhoo, just like what my mum said...cooking is easy, but you need to have the interest to do it. ^^ My mum also always said beautifully presented food always taste good...so ta dah!!!! ^^

This was on Monday's dinner menu. Chicken Congee garnished with fried onions. I am quite proud of this recipe. I found out the secret to the taste and fragrance is in the initial garlic, onion, ginger and spring onion, and the eventual chicken stock. This is the first time my congee is actually flavourful! ^^

Then on to Tuesday's menu... Spaghetti cooked in Alfredo Sauce with roast chicken ham and mushrooms. I got a bit creative with the presentation as I'm watching a Japanese drama that showcases food a lot...;;^^ So got inspired. ;;^^ Shanwen, you are right about the herbs... I added a sprinkle of parsley and the flavour is deeper than what I had done before. The tomatoes also added a lovely tangy but fresh flavour to the food. ^^

All in all, I'm quite proud of myself... I'll definitely try and cook this for my parents when they are in Melbourne again and see what is the verdict... ^^

It's a Classic!

It's finished!!! ^^ I knitted this pattern out of the Classic book by Erica Knight, part of the Rowan Collection. ^^ However, instead of using Big Wool, I've used 3 ends of Zara knitted together. Total number of balls required? 6 balls of Zara, but it still worked out cheaper for me...and best of all, I get to pick the colour that I want. ^^ This was easy to knit, and quick too. And it fits! ^^ I've tried it on. hehehe...and here's the styling that I would go for when wearing this vest... ^^

I am absolutely happy about this, as this is the very first time I knitted an actual garment, finished it and loved it! ^^

I woke up early, just in time to catch the postman this morning and this arrived from Yesasia.com! ^^ From the books, I could see a couple of projects I'm interested in. Particularly I'm very much inspired to do a pair of room shoes from the Room Shoes book. The I'm Knitting book, the designs are more contemporary and a bit different and more special, which I'm excited about. ^^ And the for the men's book, I think maybe my bf would appreciate some of it...;;^^

Talking about bf, this is what I've finished for him today!

This scarf is a mix of machine-knitting and hand-knitting. I've machine knitted this in double rib pattern, then and accident occurred when I was casting it off! I dropped a stitch and it unraveled... since I've knitted quite substantially, I was reluctant to bin it. :P So I decided to be creative and picked up the stitches and hand-knit it. Then I added buttons to create a mock-up look. Not liking the imbalance created, I picked up the other side as well and knitted it in basket-weave pattern, using some left-over Opal Sock yarn. My bf likes it, and I quite like the patchy effect too... ^^ So...erm...success!!! \^^/

I have this left-over yarns from a previous project. It's 2x 50g balls, and 2x used 50g balls. The used ones are only used VERY slightly... :P I don't really know what to do with these. I can't return them to Wool Baa cause this is a colour that we've ran out of since Jo Sharp doesn't have it either... Is anyone interested in doing a stash trade or something? ;;^^ It's definitely enough to do a scarf... Anyway if no one wants them, maybe I'll sell them on ebay... :P

Well, I took it more cause my friend is the one conducting it. I've learnt quite a bit from it. ^^ I've also been interested in photography but just more of a hobby thing. But I guess what I like most about photography is capturing that special moments. I used to remember when everyone went digital, I still used film photography and even after ending up with 6 rolls of film, I continued to defend my choice. I used to say to my friends, if digital it's deletable, but when it's film, you can capture the true moments.

(This is also taken with my mobile phone! Got to love my LG Chocolate~ ^^)

But anyway now I've gone digital. lol But I guess one day I would like to be able to buy an SLR camera...;;^^ My friend let me use his, and boy was it great!!!

Lunch Idea!

This is an easy and cheap lunch idea I had. Made this for bf...;;^^

Mini tonkatsu (comes in a pack and was about $7.00, I think) and deep fried beancurd (comes in a pack of 12 for about $2.00) served in a bed of rice sprinkled with dried seaweed and sesame seeds. This lunch pack comes with a serve of seaweed kimchi (about $3.00) and completed with tonkatsu sauce and wasabi mayonnaise. While the total comes to about $12, but this is actually enough to feed one person 4 times. ^^ So technically, the whole lunch only cost about $3! ^^ Nice and easy and delicious too! ^^

Well, I've decided now that I've finished my studies, I should really work hard to be more financially independent from my parents. I'm ecstatic of course about my new employment as a research assistant and I thought from that job and the one from Wool Baa, I could start saving. Have a real savings account that will grow and grow....

Despite having the business background (officially now), I tend to be a bit weak on the financial side of things especially on my own finances... :P So I decided to purchase a book that will help me to get started. ^^

I really wanted a vest project. Knowing that I'm not quite ready for an all 8-ply pattern, I went to look at Hurry Knits by Patons and yup! Found what I wanted to knit. ^^

I'm knitting this in Jo Sharp DK Tweed in Emporio (Col. 405 I think). ^^ I've almost finished the back, but I really hope I can finish this by today!!! ^^ Hopefully~~~

I submitted one of my jewellery designs to Beads etc... magazine and I've been informed that my piece will be displayed in the Stitches and Craft Show in Sydney (Aug) and Melbourne (Sept)!!! ^^ I'm so happy... =^^=

Also I created this new piece which I absolutely love in my rings collection on Simply Made! ^^ I just hope too some of my other pieces at Wool Baa are selling... *crossing fingers*

I've finally been able to make some handmade rings!!! ^^ I've been thinking about it and was unsure how to proceed. Decided to just do it, and came up with a couple of designs. This is one which I will be keeping for myself since I love it so much! ^^ More rings will be made for sale at Simply Made.

I've also been accepted as a research assistant at RMIT. This is another cool part-time job I'll enjoy doing. ^^

But the search for full-time work continues....

I've discovered this really nice Korean supermarket with the best range of food. So I decided to buy 600g of their bulgogi beef and a bottle of bulgogi sauce and cooked this for dinner! ^^ The taste was really good....not that I'm praising my own cooking...lol. Price-wise is even better.... less than $12.00, enough for 2 people and more!

On the knitting side, I pulled out the previous scarf and is now knitting it on a 7mm needles...we'll see how it's going. ^^

Shanwen showed me a photo of brooklynntweed's scholar collar and just right I was finishing off a scarf that I thought need some oomph. Anyhoo, decided to raid my button stash and did this. Wore it today at Wool Baa and boy was it warm!

3 ends of Cashmino 8ply knitted together in moss stitch (my favourite stitch). Simple, but cute to wear and the buttons kept the scarf in place throughout the whole busy day! ^^

My friend and I got another friend's wedding present and here it is wrapped. ^^ I love wrapping pressie's and I used to think perhaps I should work for those gift counters or something...;;^^ Well...if all else fail, you'd know you may find me in one of those places...;;^^

I decided to clean my room! ^^

Ok, to be honest I was kind of forced to clean my room as my clothes are over-flowing from my tiny closet. :( Yesterday, after wanting to do this for so long, I went to Freedom and got myself one of those movable rack thingie. ^^ My boyfriend put it together for me and I decided to clean my room first before using it. ^^ So here's my not-so-messy room:

Notice all the books under the beds?? lol and my yarn stash is also in one of the boxes at the foot of the bed. ^^

Here's my new clothing rack with some usage! ^^

And my boyfriend got these for me on Saturday... which I think makes the whole clean room nice. ^^

I moved some of my books and stuff to the other room where I housed all my other books etc... But tomorrow will be cleaning up that room and a bit of the corridor since I left a mess...;;^^

Wow...this is a record in my blogging history. I'm actually blogging almost everyday!!!

Anyway, I have been thinking about this project since ages ago. I knitted this teal mini shrug last year. I adapted the pattern from a raglan sleeve top I got from one of my Japanese pattern books. However, when I did this I did not think about the curling that I would get when I knitted everything without a border. Also, I had no clue how to pick up stitches. Hence, I ended up with with a somewhat cute top (IMHO) with collars that are messed up (so I folded it down when wearing it) and bottoms that would not stop curling. I finished it off with a ribbon tie which I do adore. ^^

Time passed and I eventually did end up learning how to pick stitches up. ;;^^ And recently I acquired a pair of fingerless gloves from Mimco. This pair of gloves are lovely but I thought the buttons are horrendous, being placed where they are.

Today while bitten by the knitting bug and a bit reluctant to start anything new and not in the mood to continue what I'm doing so far, I decided to re-work my teal shrug!!! ^^ First I picked up the stitches at the bottom and added a 2 by 2 rib edging. Then, I decided to stick the two giant buttons that seemed to misplaced on the Mimco gloves onto my shrug to cover the horrible mistakes I've made when knitting the collar.

And here is the result!!! ^^ The photo was taken on a rainy, cloudy day...so it looked a bit dark... :(

I absolutely adore it now!!! The buttons really did find their rightful place... ^^.

Keeping Kitty Kat Warm

J bought this cup for Wool Baa as I had knitted a cup warmer and actually left behind my own cup at Wool Baa for display. When she got this, I took back my cup and the initial cup warmer (which was pretty crappy I think, in fact a customer once mentioned it was ugly...lol until she asked me who did that and I told her I did... hehehe).

Anyhoo, she bought this lovely cup with a kitty cat on it. I decided to re-knit the cup warmer with improved pattern and using the Clover felting kit, added a ball of running yarn. Unexpectedly as I ran and felted the yarn, I created a word that looked like "one".

Will be writing the pattern up and bringing it to Wool Baa for display on Friday. :)

Fish - do give us a sufficiency! ^^

Ok, this is the ginger steamed fish I cooked yesterday. I kind of forgot to get the spring onions haha...so in terms of the colour of the presentation, it is a bit lacking. ;;^^ It's real easy to cook, with soya sauce, pepper, a bit of sugar and sesame oil. Steamed it first for about 20 minutes, then pour hot oil (cooking + a bit more sesame oil + sesame seeds) over it. Real quick to cook too!!! ^^

In terms of knitting projects, I haven't knitted much since I'm trying to catch up with my readings and korean dramas. ;;^^ Sigh...I really need to find a full time job though. :( I also need to call up for freelance jobs now that everything has ended. :P I feel a bit lazy but I keep telling myself no...I need to be more pro-active this time!!! Yosh~! ^0^/

Easy Recipes!

This posting is inspired by one conversation I had with Shanwen about easy cooking...^^

First, let me present Unagi Don homestyle! Don't pay $12 or even $11 for this great tasting dish. Just buy a pack of frozen unagi from those Asian grocery stores (for about $9) and you can actually cook two sets of Unagi Don with this. I was just being hungry when I did this and finished off the whole pack...hehehe... Top it off with a sprinkle of dried sea-weed and sesame seeds garnish.

Next is Karaage Chicken (Jennifer's style!). This one the recipe is purely made up with initial tips from my parents haha... The chicken has been seasoned with salt, pepper & garlic powder. Then it is tossed in cornflour (dry! not mixed with water or egg) seasoned with salt and pepper. Then deep fried and presented on a bed of rice. Topped off with Tonkatsu sauce and wasabi mayonaise, sprinkled with dried sea-weed and sesame garnish.

I know I cooked mostly Japanese influenced cooking, but I guess they are usually easy to do...;;^^ also haha...just realised that me working on a restaurant's menu as a freelance job before actually paid off with the way I described my own cooking!

And oh oh oh...serve these with Japanese green tea that you can buy for about $2.50 per pack at Asian grocery stores.

Economic, simple and nice! ^^

At least that's what I hope Chia and Tai would say when they see what I've made for their little bundle of joy who would be making his or her entrance in 3 months time...;;^^

It's my very first booties and it's knitted in 8 ply Heirloom Cashmino with 4mm needles. ^^ It is then finished off with a simple yellow button ensuring if it's a her or a him, it will suit. ^^ The pattern came from the Vogue Knit Simple Spring/Summer 2007 magazine.

I'm back from my Gold Coast trip~! ^^ I'm so glad to be back in Melbourne despite the weather and all. Don't get me wrong...Gold Coast is a very nice place. Dream World, Movie World, the beach and the shopping trips are fun.

I just dreaded the nights as the people I went with tend to get drunk within the 4 days and 3 nights we were there. I swear it's like as if they are deprived of alcohol from the way some of them were drinking. Or maybe some of them are just alcoholic... Gah~!

Here's a photo that made my day...hehe...even though I looked so scared lol my expression can't beat some people's...hehehe

Anyhoo... I captured this beautiful view from my hotel room on the last morning. Despite all, I did enjoy some parts of the trip. I guess the trip just made me realise the true colours of some people, and perhaps made me appreciate more the friends that I already have...

Buttons buttons buttons!!!

Went to the button sales with Shanwen and got heaps of buttons for my stash. I did go over budget with it but some of the buttons are really worth it! ^^

Going to Gold Coast tonight and will be away till the 14th. Excited but I hope those people I'm going with are not going to drink so much. I'd rather shop and take in the sights than get drunk...;;^^

... I trolled on ebay and buy buy buy~! ;;^^ I think I've bought party dresses to last me a lifetime...or at least for a couple of parties...haha...

Anyway, I didn't buy these two garments...I doubt very much at the end of the auctions I'll be able to afford these...;;^^ But they are so pretty and all for a good cause! The proceeds go to Unicef.

First one up is done in Patons Merino Totem DK. Though usually I don't really knit with Patons yarns, when I saw this colour, I knew I had to have it! It actually matched one of my dress-top thingie...^^

Next one up is hmmm...little pom-pom-ed scarf. This one was inspired by one of my Japanese knitting books and this was knitted in Louisa Harding Kashmir DK yarns! ^^ I think it again matches my top...hehe....

Then, finally this is the Wool Baa's bow tie scarf. ^^ Adapted in stripes in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK and Kashmir DK. Can't wait to finish it!!!! \^0^/

Reversable?

After many frustrating days with internet connection that froze from time to time, I'm finally back online. >.<

Anyway, Wool Baa had so many new yarns and books that I'm very much inspired to do some new projects other than scarves (or at least different designs of scarves). To start off, I did this Jo Sharp Reversable beanie from Knit Issue 3. Though tagged as suitable for intermediate knitters, I reckon it's good for beginners too. Best of all I completed it in one night! However, I personally do not think it is actually reversable. I mean it's got be joined by a seam. Unless one is a really neat sewer then the seam is visible if worn the other way. I think if it is to be worn in reverse, it needs to be knitted in circular form. Despite this, I think even if worn one way it's absolutely funky~! ^^

I've had a very trying week, so I am knitting with vengence to de-stress (April...I need my comics!!). Expect a couple of new projects. Here's a hint for the next one...it's a scarf, it's cashmere, it's merino wool...it's a Lisa Harding yarn!!!

red scarf! At least for me...:)

The red scarf was first spotted on this Vogue Knitting magazine. However, upon looking at the pattern, I think it's something that will take me maybe....2 years? ;;^^

Other red things I've acquired is this cardigan from Country Road and other red yarns...;;^^

Initially, I was very much attracted to the red cardigan in Country Road. Decided to knit one similarly using hmm...a modified pattern. Unfortunately, my calculation was off and I may not be able to make one with the design I like, so I bought it instead. :P

Anyway, I think I'll be knitting my scarf using the new Merino Totem 8 Ply. I actually saw a nice red that I wanted. Although, I would still like the Heirloom Cashmino yarns too...

*gasps* no Zara! LOL
(only because they don't have the red I wanted...;;^^)

Just to let everyone know, the Pacha scarf pattern is now available from Wool Baa. It comes with the purchase of the yarn...I think. ^^

Also, new bag knitted! This bag display is viewable at the Wool Baa. I had so much fun making this one... ^^ Simple to do, just 1 ball of Hawthorne Chunky yarn!!! And more pompoms! ^^

Here's a little preview of what I'm working on now...I'm not sure how it'll turn out since I'm experimenting...:P But hmm...I'll take a photo when done...:)

BTW all the new Zara colours are in and there is this lovely turquoise. I'm not sure what I'll do with it, but I'm really excited about it. ^^

Pacha Scarf

This is a scarf modified from a Japanese pattern book. It requires 1 ball of Pacha (from Wool Baa) and 1 ball of....yes! Zara!!!! The Zara is used for the Pompom bits...:)

I've finally finished Fetching! :)

Thanks to Shanwen who greatly inspired me to finish this...and the extremely cold Melbourne weather too...lol

Took me about 4 days in the end, with assignments and all.

Did this (as per recommended by Shanwen) with 3mm needles, yarn used is 1 ball of Heirloom Cashmino 8 Ply. Made teeny mistakes esp. with the Picot Hem cast off since I'm not sure what that is...:P but hey it'll do...:)

Woo Hoo~ finally something to warm my hands!!! ^^

I knitted this for a friend of mine. She wanted a white scarf and no...this is not Zara. LOL

It's ends of Cleckcheaton Country 8ply knitted in dropped garter stitch. Took me a couple of days to do as I was doing my assignments at the same time then... :P

Currently knitting 'right' Fetching! \^^/ yay~!

Well, this is not the handwarmers that I was doing...but I actually finished these in one day! I've used the Bamboo 5.4mm circulars to knit these. The pattern come from Cleckheaton Merino Supreme book.

I have to say I love the yarn...though Shanwen did warn me it does pile a lot. It's so quick to knit though! ^^

I added a stripe on to the other side as I wanted a pair of fingerless gloves that doesn't really match. I might do another one with more stripes or something. But at the moment, I'm just glad I have a finished project in time for this winter. ^^

I've decided on my next project! Ok ok...the handwarmers are not done yet, but I just want something new...;;^^

I want to knit this shrug from Patons Creative Accessories 2 book. I've decided to use Zara again. The reason? I have 6 balls of Zara for another project, but I doubt I'll want to knit that for quite some time. So I might as well try.

I also bought 4mm Ivore needles...they are great to use!!! I originally want a bamboo to knit with, only at the moment Wool Baa has ran out...so I thought I'd try the Ivore. Anything's better than the metals that I have...;;^^

The only thing is I hope I'll be able to finish this...sigh~

I wanted a white scarf....

Finally! I actually finished a knitting project since uni has started... >_<

I wanted a white/creamy scarf, in a pretty chunky yarn in a pretty lose knit. I can't believe I'm so detailed with my requirements this time since I just do things for the heck of it...;;^^

But anyway, my new white scarf is done with 3 ends of an 8 ply yarn (yay~! Zara~!), on a 20mm needles in moss stitch. Easy! Took me only a few hours.

Actually started experimenting with a 12mm needles and a basketweave pattern...only I didn't like it being to tight and close...then went on to 15mm with a made up rib pattern. I just wanted to see what type of rib/pattern would come out if I experimented. Unfortunately though the stitch was interesting, it wasn't what I wanted.

So finally decided on a 20mm and moss stitch to keep it reasonably steady (ie. won't droop too much). I like it. ^^

I really need to finish my hand warmer next...before I run out of winter. :P

Prologue...

Well, everything has a beginning and this blog began when I was asked by my new friend, Shanwen if I have a knitting blog. I saw what she has done and was inpired to do the same. ^^

My very first featured project will be Ava-Recreated as Shanwen was asking me about this. ^^ Ava is a pattern from Rowan's A Ribbon Twist Collection.

Instead of using the Ribbon Twist yarn, I've used 3 ends of Zara which actually came from another project. I knitted another Rowan pattern and it didn't turn out as I expected (it was huge despite it being the smallest size :P). I unravelled it and re-knitted it into Ava. As I was technically using "scrap" yarns, I had little knots where the yarns were joined when I knitted so I have to wear it with the stocking stitch showing on the outside.

Then to add a little special quirky touch, I've added a little embellished felted motif. This was inspired by Wool Baa who just got the Clover Felting Kit in stock. ^^ I wanted to try it out and just perfectly I've just finished my poncho.

This is a picture of Ava (front) and below is Ava (back).

I think I've used about 6 balls of Zara in charcoal. I might make a mistake with the quantities due to it originally being a re-used yarn.

Just an added interesting fact about the Zara yarns...it's surprisingly quite a good wearing yarn. After knitting my first garment, I threw it into the washing machine and dryer to see if it'll shrink. It didn't...then I unravelled it and re-knitted it. It worked out quite well for the poncho and for sure Zara is my favourite yarn! ^^
